I attach below a version of a piece commissioned by the London Review of Books in the aftermath of 9-11 The editor spiked it and instead published a piece by one of his friends, who was reacting sensitively, of course, to events from 20 miles up the Hudson. It was, I suppose, good to see that friendship still counted for something!

To keep dancing a jig on the grave of Mladic, I must add to Twain's alleged comment that he wished no man dead, but he often read obituaries with great pleasure, Hell, this one gave me rigor mortis of the dimples.

I am opposed to the death penalty on principle... but if I would not bother joining abolitionists in a vigil to preserve Mladic. In fact even diehard abolitionists might will give this one a pass. Good riddance! What kept you, Death?
