RE: DHS final rule establishing a fixed time period of admission for representatives of foreign media organizations and journalists (July 17, 2026) 

Dear Members of Congress, 

We are a coalition of nonprofit journalist associations and press freedom advocacy organizations writing in opposition to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) new restrictive rule ending the decades-long practice of admitting foreign correspondents for as long as their assignments last. 

I argue for a pragmatic, tolerant approach to the controversy about who pays for (ex)Prince Andrew's funeral. Give him a (dead)line! If the pompous parasite pops his clogs promptly we'll happily pay! But we're prepared to renegotiate if he bundles Fergie in the deal!

Back in the 90s, I wrote 6,000 words for the Village Voice on the Republic of Nauru - which was roughly two words for each inhabitant of the world's third smallest state. As I explained to the editor, I was hoping to do a follow up on the PRC on the same basis, at a dollar a word! 

Been there, done that. Went from Gibraltar to Ceuta in the days when it took longer to cross from the Rock into Spain than to sail from Malaga to Ceuta, where the traffic flowed interrupted across the border with the EU in and out of Africa,
